Fishermen & Economy

Real Livelihoods Behind Every Catch

Behind every pound of local seafood is a working economy — boats, crews, docks, processors, markets, and the families all of it supports. The groundfish fishery alone provides steady, year-round landings that keep ice machines, processors, and hoists running for every fishery. When the local fleet thrives, those dollars circulate here. But rising quota costs and consolidation make it harder every year for small operators to stay independent. That's the gap the Trust was built to close.

As an Italian kid growing up on the shores of Monterey, I’ve always known how deeply rooted fishing is in our community. This way of life is too important to lose. Thanks to the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust and their work to raise awareness about sustainable local seafood—among both consumers and policymakers—and through strong partnerships with fishermen, we’re helping to ensure a thriving seafood economy and a healthy ocean for future generations.
